Rutu Farm

A Weekend Farm Stay in Wai for Your Small Family - Where Kids Have Room to Breathe

Most weekend spots near Pune and Mumbai ask you to choose between comfort and character. Either a proper hotel with no real outdoor space, or a farm stay where the basics are an afterthought. Rutu Farm in Wai sits between those two. The rooms are air-conditioned and well maintained. The outdoor space is a working farm.

Wai is about 2 hours from Pune and around 4 hours from Mumbai. Families from Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Mumbai come here for a weekend that works for children without wearing out the adults.

What a Stay Looks Like for a Small Family

The cottages are the most practical option for a family of two to four. Each room has a double bed with the option of an extra single bed, air conditioning, a fan, an LED TV, a tea and coffee maker, and a private backyard with a sit-out. The bathroom is attached and connected to solar-heated water. There is no shared corridor or lobby to pass through.

The premium tents have more space, better furnishings and a sit-out with a coffee table in front. They suit a couple with one child or parents who want some room after the kids go to sleep.

Food is prepared fresh after you order. Lunch is an unlimited Maharashtrian thali – vegetarian, egg, chicken, mutton or freshwater Shivda fish. Dinner has both thali and a la carte options. Nothing is pre-cooked.

What Keeps Kids Occupied

A visit to the working farm is available on request. Children who have grown up in cities often have not seen sugarcane growing, stood near a cow or watched a tractor work through a field. A bullock cart ride and a tractor ride are also available on request.

The games area has badminton, table tennis, foosball, carrom, chess, snake and ladders and playing cards. Dhom Dam is 4 km from the farm. Maha Ganpati Temple in Wai town is also 4 km. Panchgani is 16 km if the family wants a day out.

Families Who Have Stayed Here

A family of three from Pune, first trip with a seven-year-old

Both parents work full-time and had been putting off a trip for months. They wanted somewhere that would interest their son without requiring them to manage a full itinerary. The child spent both mornings at the farm, first with the animals, then asking to go back. The parents sat in the backyard while the farm staff took him around. The second afternoon they drove to Dhom Dam. They said it was the first trip where they felt they had actually rested.

A couple from Satara with a toddler and an older child

The children were two and nine years old. They needed somewhere clean, not too far and with something for the older child to do independently. The enclosed private backyard worked well for the toddler – flat ground, no steps, no open water. The older child was at the games area most of the afternoon. The staff were flexible about meal timing, which mattered with a toddler on a different schedule.

Two families from Mumbai travelling together

Four adults and three children between 6 and 11. A resort with a pool had been the original plan but one child could not swim and the parents were not comfortable. They booked two cottages side by side. The children were on the bullock cart and at the games area most of the day. The adults had time together without managing the children continuously. They drove back to Mumbai on Sunday afternoon.

Is a Farm Stay Suitable for Very Young Children?

The property is flat with ground-level cottage access and enclosed backyard areas. There is no swimming pool. The staff are used to guests with young children and are flexible with meal timing. It helps to mention the ages of your children when you enquire.

How Far Is Wai From Pune and Mumbai?

About 2 hours by road from Pune and roughly 4 hours from Mumbai via the expressway. Families from Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Solapur are within 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
