Rutu Farm

Planning a Family Gathering Near Panchgani or Mahabaleshwar? Try a Resort in Wai Without the Crowd

Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar get busy. On most weekends, especially around holidays, you are competing with tour buses, packed restaurants and lobby queues. If the point of a family gathering is to actually spend time with each other, that environment works against you.

Rutu Farm is in Wai, about 16 km before Panchgani and 36 km from Mahabaleshwar. Families from Pune, Mumbai, Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli and Solapur come here when they want the same landscape without the footfall.

What the Farm Offers

The property has three accommodation types. Twelve deluxe air-conditioned cottages, each with a private backyard garden and an open-to-sky bathroom courtyard. Two royal tents with a sit-out and green lawn in front. Four premium tents, larger and better furnished, also with a private sit-out. Most groups book a mix depending on who is travelling.

Food is cooked fresh on-site. The menu is Maharashtrian, vegetarian and non-vegetarian both available. The kitchen does not run on a buffet timer. You eat when the group is ready. The kobichi bhaji with cashews is something people keep mentioning.

Activities on the farm include a bullock cart ride, a tractor ride, a walk through the working farm, badminton, table tennis, foosball, carrom and a karaoke setup. A campfire is available in the winter months. Dhom Dam is 4 km away, Panchgani is 16 km, Pandavgad is 14 km and Mahabaleshwar is 36 km.

The Kind of Groups That Come Here

A family of nine from Kolhapur and Sangli

Two brothers and their families, along with their parents, had been trying to get everyone in the same place for two years. The parents are in their early seventies. A hill station felt like too much effort and a hotel in the city defeated the purpose. They found Rutu Farm through someone at work who had visited with a similar group.

They took four cottages. The parents got the ones closest to the main area. The cottages have ground-level entry and the bathrooms are spacious enough to not be a problem for older guests. The kids were out on the bullock cart while the adults had their first real, unhurried conversation in years. Lunch and dinner came to them. Nobody had to manage a restaurant booking or think about parking.

The group did one afternoon at Dhom Dam and skipped Panchgani entirely. They were not there to sightsee.

A couple from Thane with a young child

Both work full-time. Finding a weekend that worked for both their schedules and also made sense for a five-year-old took some effort. They had done Lonavala and Alibaug before. They wanted something the child would actually remember.

The farm visit made the morning. The child had not been close to animals before or seen how vegetables grow. The tractor ride was a highlight. The cottage was clean, air-conditioned and comfortable enough that the parents slept well, which is not always a given on trips with young children. They spent Sunday morning at the Maha Ganpati Temple in Wai town and drove back to Thane before evening traffic.

A group of cousins from Pune and Solapur

Six cousins between the ages of 28 and 42 had not been in the same place since a family wedding four years earlier. A few had children. A couple were travelling without them. They needed somewhere that worked for both.

They booked two premium tents and one cottage. The sit-outs on the premium tents became the evening gathering spot each night. Cards, tea, conversation that kept going later than anyone planned. The younger children were occupied at the games area during the day, which gave the adults actual time to talk. One cousin had driven from Solapur and said the drive took just under three hours. Everyone stayed two nights. One group was already asking about dates for the following year before they left.

Is Wai a Good Place for a Family Trip?

It works particularly well if the group includes older members or young children. The terrain is flat, the environment is quiet and there is no pressure to fill every hour with activity. Wai town has a few temples and local spots worth a couple of hours. The major hill stations are close enough for a half-day trip if the group wants it.
